HAVE FUN PLAYING HOCKEY

We take the view that children are most likely to succeed at sport if they can go at their own pace and if they are enjoying what they do. We encourage them to take the game seriously and to focus on developing their skills and tactical awareness but the emphasis is very much on playing for pleasure and helping the children get the best out of themselves.

We have various training sessions, roughly equating to U8 (minimum age is 7), U10, U12 and U14 agegroups. There is no strict age segmentation, however, and children can move up to a more competitive group at a point at which they are ready for a new challenge.

Fun breeds success

This emphasis on fun does not mean that Kobras do not compete at the highest levels. We regularly send members to Scottish Midland Region teams, and have frequently had members in the Scotland Development Squad for their age groups. Many Kobras have gone on to play for Scotland.

SKILLS FOR LIFE

It's not just about ball skills and tactics though. We are strict about good sportsmanship and playing the game in the right spirit. We hope that as they pass through the Kobras system children will learn to be good winners and good losers and to take the rough with the smooth: skills that they can carry with them for the rest of their lives.

As players reach the top of the Kobras section we encourage them to develop skills as coaches and as umpires. We have regular workshops where our Youth players can gain formal qualifications as "Hockey Leaders", enabling them to act as assistant coaches at our training sessions. On a typical evening each adult coach will have two or three of these assistants. Juniors also help by officiating matches for the younger children at our regular tournaments.

How much does it cost?

Subscription rates for 2024-25 are as follows:

How can I join?

We normally invite children who are interested in joining to come down and give hockey a try for a few weeks before committing. This is not a formal trial or a test of ability - it’s a chance to see if they actually enjoy hockey and want to engage and take part. We take everyone, so long as they are volunteers rather than being forced to attend.

Get in touch and tell us when you'd like to come down. For your first few visits we can lend you a hockey stick, but you should have your own shinpads and mouthguard. Some people choose not to, preferring to wait until their child is ready to commit, but in this case the club cannot be responsible.

If, after a few visits, you decide you'd like to join, then go to our registration page which will take you through the joining process.
