Kobras at Inverleith

The Kobras were in action at the annual Inverleith tournament this weekend, a huge event with clubs from all over Eastern Scotland taking over both Peffermill pitches for the day.

In the U10s, Gus Clark was making his debut at the tender age of 7, and no doubt it was a typical battling Clark family performance. The team won some, drew some and lost some and generally had a good time.

The U12s also featured a couple of debutants, in the shape of Louie Parsons and Ellah Roberts, who fitted in very nicely into the team. Louis managed to get on the scoresheet within a couple of minutes of taking to the pitch for the first time.  The team did very well too, making it through to the final eight, where they drew with Gullane, but went through on goal difference from the earlier rounds. This led to a semi-final showdown with hosts Inverleith, to whom they had already lost in the pool stages. In the event, Inverleith will have felt themselves lucky to come away with a draw, a result that saw them go through on a marginally superior goal difference to Kinross.

The U15s were a bit of a scratch team, borrowing a couple of players from Stirling Wanderers and lending them a goalie in return. But there was some excellent hockey played, and with two U12s playing as well, they ended up a very creditable 9th.

Prizewinners

For those that couldn't make the annual dinner at the weekend, first of all you missed a cracking night out. For the record, we raised £574 towards club funds.

You also you need to know about the prizewinners for the season. That's them in the picture above. For the teams, the winners were as follows:

Men:
MVP* 1s - David McIntyre
MVP 2s - Iain Geddis
Most improved player - Cameron Banks
Young Player of the Year - Iain Geddis
Top Gun - Chris Robson

Ladies:
Players Player of the Year 1s - Sarah Collins
Players Player of the Year 2s - Sally Montford
Young Player of the Year - Amy Salmon
Top Goal Scorer 1s - Vicky Carver
Top Goal Scorers 2s - Kirsty Dunn

If you count them, no fewer than five prizes went to former Kobras.

The president's prize, for outstanding contribution to the club, went to...the president herself, for seeing us safely through the merger. As Gurdi said in his valedictory speech, there was probably nobody else who could have pulled this feat off.

Also for the record, it should be recorded that as well as winning MVP for the M2s and young player of the year, Iain Geddis won most of the raffle prizes.

Not that I'm jealous or anything.

*For the uninitiated, "most valuable player".

Kobras at the Grove Tournament

It was glorious weather for the Grove tournament at DISC in Dundee this weekend. The hockey was pretty special too, with five Kinross teams taking part - two at U10, two at U12 and one at U14 (although we could probably have stretched to two teams there as well had we realised how many players were going to want to play on the day).

This was very impressive in terms of results with most teams clocking up an almost uninterrupted series of wins. Only our youngest team found the going tougher - no surprise when they were up against players of much greater experience. They all did us proud, though, with some battling performances.

Across the board, it was high quality hockey, with the Kinross teams distinguishing themselves with good team performances.

Very proud coaches tonight!

Half marathon result

The money is in from our efforts at the half marathon the other day. We got a cheque for £200 from the Roadrunners and together with a very impressive £244 from Catherine Robertson who gave us a share of her sponsorship for actually running the race, we have a significant boost to the pitch fund.

We're still looking for people to help at with the LEPRA Edinburgh to St Andrews cycle ride on 11 June - it's just doing teas and coffees and tidying up for a couple of hours, and we could get a pretty chunky donation to the pitch fund if we can get enough volunteers to help. It's open to Kobras parents and the older Kobras too, so if you can help out, drop a line to the club email or to Gurdi.

Kinross Half Marathon

There was a great turnout by Kinross HC members to assist with the Kinross Half Marathon, with the proceeds going towards the pitch fund. As you can see from the pictures of Feeding Station 1 below, this was run with almost military precision, and the runners certainly seemed very grateful for our efforts, although some seemed rather disappointed that a station staffed by "the hockey club" didn't actually mean young ladies in short skirts.

And just to show that it wasn't just Chris and Muttley doing all the work, there's a pic at the end of one of the other teams, featuring Gail, Pete, Wendy and Jo, together with one of Catherine Robertson who was actually running the race.

Gallery: Gurdi at the World Cup

Gurdi sends some pictures of him at the Masters World Cup in Oz.

Apparently, England beat Aus 4-1 in the final. Scotland's results were:

  • Beat NZ 2-1; Sth Africa 5-2 and Ireland 2-0 to ensure a play-off position
  • Lost to Eng 1-3 and Aus 0-4 to end up in the 3rd/4th playoff.
  • Beat Wales (the surprise package of the tournament) 2-1 to win Bronze

Gallery: Kobras at Carnegie

Andy has already posted a brief report on the Kobras at the Carnegie tournament over at the Facebook page. The gallery below, of pictures of the U14s, comes courtesy of Tricia Macpherson - if anyone has any good photos of the U10s and U12s, we'd love to publish them too; unfortunately I didn't get a chance to take any, apart from the team photo above. [Update: a few U12s pics added in a separate gallery below - including the important moment when Kael fell over the goal].

Sponsored walk result

hockeyptichcolourscropped[1].jpg

The last of the sponsored walk money is now in and the grand total is...£1530. This makes it our biggest fundraiser to date. Well done to everyone who took part and did their bit towards getting our new pitch.

The fund is getting close to £13000, and when pledges are added in we are over the £93,000 mark.

Keep the Sainsbury's vouchers coming

The Sainsbury's Active Kids vouchers are still coming in at a steady rate of knots. By my reckoning we have 1294 vouchers so far, which means we can almost get three bags of hockey balls for the Kobras. Which is just as well given the rate at which they disappear.

We can go on collecting vouchers until July, so keep them coming.
